Edmund Optics^®, a global manufacturer and solutions provider of optical technology, is proud to announce that its UAV Series Fixed Focal Length Lenses have won the Silver-Level 2024 Vision Systems Design (VSD) Innovators Award. These lenses are compact, lightweight, and high-resolution, optimized for use on autonomous vehicles and drones.

The UAV Series Lenses are athermalized for wide temperature ranges and ruggedized to maintain performance throughout shocks and vibrations, making them ideal for drone mapping and surveying, aerial imaging, and photogrammetry applications.

Normally, lenses need to grow in size, weight, and complexity in order to accommodate higher resolutions, but the UAV Series Lenses maintain a compact size while achieving up to 24.4 megapixel resolution on 2.74µm pixel size sensors. They are tailored for new, high-resolution image sensors like the 4th-generation Sony Pregius 1.2” IMX530 and IMX540 sensors.

Locking focus and iris rings in the UAV Series Lenses prevent unwanted adjustments during use. These lenses are also optimized for long working distances, as these mobile robots often look at objects further away than those on a factory floor. Extra care was also taken to minimize stray light throughout the lens assemblies, which is critical because the conditions found in robotics environments are much less controlled than those on a factory floor.

Other available lenses that can match the 24.4 megapixel resolution of the UAV Series Fixed Focal Length Lenses from Edmund Optics are much larger and heavier, making them impractical for mobile applications. The UAV series lenses use streamlined mechanics and tight tolerances attained through advanced assembly techniques to achieve both a small form factor and high resolution.
