Hi, my name is Randall, a Solutions Engineer at Edmund Optics. Have you ever needed to precisely align your optical components or make repeated adjustments in more than one direction? Today, we will see how to create an X-Y stage configuration using our TECHSPEC Single Axis Crossed Roller Translation Stages. The setup is simple and will only take a couple of minutes. The methods used here can be applied to our other TECHSPEC Stage products as well. In front of me are the mechanical components we'll use in our X-Y setup. 70mm, Center Drive, Solid Top, Metric Stage. 40mm, Center Drive, Solid Top, Metric Stage. 2.5mm, Metric Allen Wrench. Before we start, here is a quick tip. Be sure to mount the equivalent sized stage or a smaller one on top of a larger stage so as not to block access to the micrometer or to have low capacity issues, the larger stage on top of a smaller one. Let's start. First, turn the micrometer drive, the 40mm stage, counter-clockwise until 2 M3 counterbored holes in the base are exposed. Here and here. Step 2: Place the stage on top of the 70mm stage and align the exposed holes with the corresponding M3 holes from the top plate of the 70mm stage. Step 3: Now using the 2.5mm metric Allen Wrench, and the included M3 socket head cap screws, thread this end of the 40mm stage to the top plate. Step 4: Turn the micrometer drive clock-wise and expose the 2 M3 counterbored holes at the opposite end of the 40 mm stage. Press them down using the M3 socket head cap screws with the Allen key. As you can see, in just a couple of minutes, we combine 2 Single Axis Crossed Roller Translation Stages to complete an X-Y axis system allowing for repeatable adjustments and precise alignment in 2 directions.
